Woven into the fabric of Kilkenny, the Smithwick’s story is one of resilience, innovation, and deep-rooted tradition. From its origins on St. Francis Abbey where monks first brewed ale to the establishment of the Smithwick’s brewery in the early 1700s, this iconic Irish red ale has become synonymous with the city itself.
Steeped in local history and shaped by generations of craftsmanship, Smithwick’s has evolved into Ireland’s oldest and most beloved ale. Its journey reflects not only the changing landscape of Irish brewing, but also Kilkenny’s enduring spirit and identity.
